Steen and I bought a new car! I've been wanting to blog about this for a few weeks and haven't gotten around to it. We purchased it on May 21st through a guy who bought it from a bank. It is a 2005 white Hyundai Elantra, it had 67000 miles on it when we bought it, awesome condition... and, we got a great price for it!
There was one problem that we weren't expecting. The day we bought it we left it in the sun with the windows up while I was at work and Steen was finishing up the purchase. When we got in we couldn't miss the thick smell of cigarette smoke that permeated the whole car. It was nasty and I was realllllly upset about it.
So, we'd already bought it, what could we do? Heck, we had to clean it! I searched the internet high and low for ways to get rid of smoke smell and found some good ideas. Vinegar, baking soda, Febreze... let me tell you, NONE OF THESE WORK UNLESS THE CAR IS DEEP CLEANED!! After a week, the smell was just as bad if not worse. Off to deep clean! Steen and I took a whole day, 11 hours to be exact, to pull all the seats and seatbelts out of the car, shampoo them and high pressure rinse each one, and shampoo the carpets and ceiling. Needless to say, it was absolutely disgusting. Dark brown water was pouring out the bottom of the seats. The seatbelts went from a light brown (at least it looked light, until we recognized the ACTUAL color) to clean tan. My uncle kept a bottle of dirty water from the shampooer... it was so dark and full of tobacco you couldn't see the sun through the bottle. I'm almost glad we found out about it being a smoker car... I'm pretty sure we would've gotten cancer just driving it haha!
After all the hard work, it doesn't smell and it isn't brown! It's been great! It hasn't given us any trouble so far, and it has been a good alternative to Steen's gas guzzler. I'll post some pics soon.
